Flexible Management for Separate Treatment of Organic and Residual Waste

In the waste management centre Rhein-Lahn, located in Singhofen, is an MBT (composting process) and an organic-waste-treatment plant with a biological drying of the oversize grains for the energy recovery in external biomass powerplants. Both technologies run almost similar. At the current optimization of the process air situation, the main focus is on flexible adaptability with respect to future changes. The quantities of the residual- and organic waste could be changed in the future by waste management measures and modified regional partnerships.

Currently, experiments are made with the aim to investigate, whether a modification of the MBT from composting-process to a purely biological drying process of the mid-calorific fraction is possible and economically useful. First results show, that it is possible to use the existing technology of the MBT-facility to produce a material that fulfils the requirements for an alternative fuel in power plants. A prerequisite is, however, that there follows a mechanical seperation step after the drying process, for instance to reduce the high content of minerals in the material.
Through the reduction of the duration in the intensive rot phase, a tripling of the throughput is conceivable. The energy efficiency of the plants can be improved significantly. Furthermore, the biogenic content of the mid-calorific fraction could be used as a substitute for fossil fuels.

The Allegory of Stupidity and Waste

This paper on the allegory of stupidity and waste is a more or less daring view on tomorrow’s capabilities in global waste management. A society facing seemingly unresolvable ecological challenges seems to be immune to its own overconsumption.

Implementation and evaluation of a real-time capable approach to sensor-based sorting using CNNs
© Lehrstuhl für Abfallverwertungstechnik und Abfallwirtschaft der Montanuniversität Leoben (12/2024)
In state-of-the-art optical sorting, engineered image processing algorithms are commonly used to identify materials. However, for complex material textures and high- ensity material streams, these approaches are often unable to maintain the desired sorting quality. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been proven to outperform such approaches in their ability to classify objects in images.
