Utilization of Slags from the Recycling of Metallurgical Residuals

The metallurgical industry is one of the world´s largest producers of various partly complex residues, which have to be landfilled in the majority of cases. Because of the increasing environmental regulations a recycling of such wastes is focused as important topic. This for example includes flue dusts from the steel industry and the cupola furnace. The wastes generally contain heavy metals like zinc, lead, copper and iron. Because of these metals such residues are an important secondary source of raw material.

To separate the different metals out of the waste various concepts are already available, which are partly realized in industrial scale. The most important of them are listed in the following:
 Waelz Kiln,
 Rotary Hearth Furnace,
 PRIMUS® Technology,
 Plasma Arc Fuming,
 RecoDust (Flash-Reactor),
 PIZO and
 Submerged Arc Furnace.
For the recycling of Electric Arc Furnace Dust the waelz kiln is the most important facility. About 80 % of the recycled Electric Arc Furnace Dust is treated by this technology. Most of the recycling concepts have their biggest disadvantage in huge amounts of produced slag. For example the waelz kiln produces slag in a range of 600 – 650 kg/ton dry input material. The produced residues out of these processes must be dumped. In various countries this is ecologically and economically difficult. Therefore, another possibility for using these slags must be found. An opportunity is to use them as input material for the cement industry or road construction.
The blast furnace slag and partly the steel mill slag are already used as feeding material for the production of cement or as additional charge for road construction. For the utilization of residues out of metallurgical processes in such cases, different requirements are mandatory.
If slags are applied in the production of cement, different advantages would be the result. The most important one will be the prevention of the landfilling. Another important aspect is the reduction of CaCO3 feed in the cement production, because the residues partly act as CaO substituent. During the cement process CO2 is generated out of the calcination of the limestone. This industry is responsible for 5 – 7 % of the CO2 emissions over the world.
