Although production of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) officially stopped worldwide in the 1970’s, there is still a lack of appropriate information on the dimension of the PCBs presence in many areas worldwide, which brings uncertainty regarding the possible effects of human expo-sure that could be arise with “land recycling” strategies taking place nowadays, aimed at trans-forming derelict areas into residential and commercial areas (Bezama et al. 2008).
This work presents the development and evaluation of an ultrasound-assisted ex-traction method of PCBs from soil samples for their analysis with GC with ECD detector, as a more economic and faster alternative to the classic extraction methods. To validate the method, a three-step process was carried out. First, calibration curves in a concentration range of 5 – 50 g/litre were obtained for each evaluated congener in order to establish the instrumental quantification and detection limits. In the second stage, extraction was optimized by defining the best solvent mixtures. Finally, in the third stage, quantification and detection limits of the method were established, and the precision and accuracy of the extraction were determined. Re-sults indicate that the proposed methodology has satisfactory linear working ranges for concen-trations between 10 and 50 ppb, with adequate detection and quantification limits for instru-ments as well as method (2 – 13 ppb and 3 – 20 ppb, respectively). Moreover, the method has suitable precision and accuracy, furthermore reducing more than 90 % of the extraction time and 60 – 70 % of solvent consumption when compared to the classic soxhlet extraction method.

Die Novelle der Gewerbeabfallverordnung
© Lexxion Verlagsgesellschaft mbH (6/2025)

The new Regulation on waste shipments brings significant changes both for waste on the "Green List" and for waste for which a notification is required. Of particular note is the new auditing obligation, which applies to all waste shipments.
