At present, in ten coal-fired power plants in Germany solid recovered fuels from mixed municipal waste and production-specific commercial waste are co-combusted and experiments have been conducted at other locations. Altogether, in 2010 about 800,000 tons of these solid recovered fuels were used. In the coming years up to 2014 a slight decline in the quantity of materials used in co-combustions is expected.
The co-combustion activities are to some extent significantly influenced by increasing power supply from renewable energy sources and their impact on the regime of coal-fired power plants usage. Moreover, price trends of CO2 allowances, solid recovered fuels as well as imported coal also have significant influence. Aside from the usage of solid recovered fuels with biogenic con-tent, the co-combustion of pure renewable biofuels has become more important in coal-fired power plants.
The power plant operators make high demands on the quality of solid recovered fuels. The individual requirement profiles concerning the solid recovered fuels to be co-combusted include chemical, mechanical, calorific and other properties.
As the operational experience shows, a set of problems may be posed by co-combustion:
- Incomplete burnout,
- Chlorine corrosion,
- HCl emission – Retrofitting of emission control requirements at CFB plants,
- Fouling and slagging of the boiler heating surfaces,
- Increased chloride load of the flue gas desulfurization and FGD products,
- Problems with discharging, conveying and dosing,
- Mechanical problems due to metallic contaminants,
- Chemical and thermal problems due to aluminum in CFB boilers,
- Erosion of boiler and
- Exceeding the capacity of the ash discharge systems.

Exploring techno-environmental pathways how urban biorefineries for
organic waste valorization potentially contribute to the design of future
urban bioeconomy systems with net-positive impact
© Lehrstuhl für Abfallverwertungstechnik und Abfallwirtschaft der Montanuniversität Leoben (11/2022)
When striving to understand the complexity of driving forces on energy and material flows within cities and of cities in interrelation with their surroundings the multidisciplinary approach of framing, describing and specifying the regionalized urban metabolism is the state-of-the art tool which is currently further gaining in significance and scientific and political attention (Sanches and Bento 2020). There is for example the household metabolism for heating fuels which constitutes a major fraction of urban energy flows from the input side, which has to be reduced in the future to decouple from import dependency and from greenhouse gas intensive energy systems.

The Added Value of the Balance Method for Waste-to-Energy Operators and National Authorities
© Thomé-Kozmiensky Verlag GmbH (9/2016)
Different directives of the European Union may require operators of Waste to Energy WTE plants to monitor the composition of their waste feed with respect to the Content of biomass and fossil organic matter. The mass fractions of both materials are not only of relevance for the amount of fossil and thus climate relevant CO2 emissions of the plant, but also for the ratio of renewable energy generated, as biomass in wastes is considered as renewable energy source.
Infrasound Solution for Fouled SCR and the Economizer in World’s Largest Waste-to-Energy Boiler
© Thomé-Kozmiensky Verlag GmbH (9/2016)
Infrafone, with headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden, is using infrasound as a soot cleaning method and has plenty of experiences from various fuels and applications. The technical development has resulted in a product with much higher acoustic power than any other similar products on the market and acoustic modelling software that is unique. Infrasound cleaning increases the efficiency, the availability and the lifetime of industrial and marine boilers. In this text we start by describing the properties of infrasound and the product, while finishing by looking deeper into a couple of recent results obtained on waste to energy boilers.
