Waste Management 2030 – Four Scenarios and How to Use Them
The Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment and Public Health asked bifa environmental Institute to carry out a scenario analysis of the Bavarian waste management for the year 2030. The results can be transferred to other regions with similar situations. 60 experts from waste management and other fields were integrated in the process. An extensive amount of data was analyzed using software tools.
- Policy first: policy as the engine of sustainable management,
- Markets first: markets drive innovation,
- Glocalization: regionalization of the European Community law and
- Sustainability last: politics of the day rather than strategy.
The scenarios can be used in many ways such as the identification of own strategic weak-nesses and strengths or changes in power and interests of other actors. The developed scenario kit can also be used to work out an own specific scenario as a basis for strategy development. Finally it can be used to develop new business strategies in creative workshops.

Die Kreislaufwirtschaft erzielt in Deutschland aktuell einen Umsatz von etwa 76 Milliarden Euro (+ 1,1 % p. a.) und beschäftigt über 290.000 Erwerbstätige (+ 0,8 % p. a.).
Die Sekundärrohstoffmärkte präsentieren sich inzwischen jedoch fast unisono in schwieriger Verfassung. Ein klares Marktbild kann sich aufgrund der zahlreichen politischen Unwägbarkeiten bis hin zum neuen Corona-Virus, die die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung immer stärker belasten, nicht entwickeln. Die Stimmung ist jedoch angespannt und von Unsicherheit geprägt. Unsere Prognose ist ernüchternd: Wir rechnen eher mit zunehmender Bewölkung als mit freundlichen Aussichten.

Die Abfall- und Recyclingwirtschaft in Deutschland leistet einen erheblichen Beitrag zur Lösung wichtiger Zukunftsaufgaben, wie Ressourcen- und Klimaschutz. Trotzdem ist anzumerken, dass wir nicht nur bei der „Energiewende“, sondern auch bei der „Rohstoffwende“ erst am Anfang eines langen Weges stehen. Von einer wirklichen Kreislaufwirtschaft sind wir auch in Deutschland noch sehr weit entfernt!

In February 2019, the German Federal Cabinet adopted the 'National Strategy for Reducing Food Waste', setting a framework for the future direction of this initiative. Among other things, it stipulated that an inter-ministerial "Indicator 12.3 Working Group" should prepare the data bases and methods for nationwide balancing of food waste generation (baseline). Based on existing 2015 data, this status quo analysis will be used as a starting point to agree on milestones for the respective sectors.

As in many developing countries, municipal solid waste (MSW) is one of the major environmental problems in Turkey. Problems associated with MSW are difficult to address, but efforts towards more efficient and environmentally acceptable waste disposal continue in Turkey. Although strict regulations on the management of solid waste are in place, undesirable disposal methods such as open dumping still have been widely applied in Turkey.
