Protocol and Lab Measurements Supporting the Design of a New PRB Approach

Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRB) are designed and contracted perpendicular to shallow groundwater flow, requiring a complex assessment of the reactive material and the technical design of the installation. While the contaminated water flows through the reactive matrix the con-taminating substances are precipitated, adsorbed or degraded thus the contaminated plume is cleaned (Bőhm et al. 2003, Filep et al. 2002, Madarász et al. 2010). The traditional reactive ma-terials applied are zero valent iron (ZVI) and active carbon granulates.

Up to now, hundreds of articles and reports on PRB development and proposals for new reactive material application have been published and more research is being carried out in order to make PRB a complete technology both in removal efficiency and cost-effective as-pects. The traditional reactive materials applied in such installations are often iron and active carbon granulates. Our paper shows the concept and design protocol of a new approach of reac-tive barriers. The reactive matrix is lignite as high humin acid containing material with decent adsorption potential that can reach up to 30 % of that of the active carbon. The research project consisted of four development/research modules that strongly interact with each other. These are the following: 1, Reactive material development; 2, Barrier/layer hydraulic compatibility; 3, Design and technical feasibility; 4, Utilization of exhausted reactive material.
