The MBT plant Pohlsche Heide started in May 2005. With the beginning of the operation the MBT Pohlsche Heide installed a shredder according to the state of the art of that time in the mechanical pre-treatment for commercial waste. The shredder (used at that time) was in accordance with the demands of the call for bids. A fraction size was demanded which was achieved only to a limited extend. 100 % of < 300 mm should be achieved and this could be proved with the efficiency tests. The shredder worked following the principle of tearing with teeth running through a counter comb. Hereby still some bigger parts were only squeezed between the teeth and the counter comb what lead to the problem that functions of the downstream machines were essentially disrupted.
Thus lead to winding of conveyor belts, other belts, canvas etc. Hard parts caused jamming in the downstream machines.
Within 5 years the shredder crushed a total of around 240.000 Mg commercial wastes. On account of the increased wear and the 1.5 fold shift operation the shredder was amortised after 4 years. After five years of operation it was decided to buy a new shredder. At first a market analysis has been carried out at which after a point system a shredder system was selected. This point system was based on the working conditions, on the quality of the RDF to be delivered and on the availability of the following machines. The price in this phase of selection did not play a role. After the checking the various shredders we found out very quickly that we would achieve a defined grain size 100% <200 mm in the long run only with a cutting system. Important hereby was to consider the specification of the following disks and star screens. Three manufacturers were found which were asked for an offer. Thus the similarity of the manufacturers was given. After delivery and the instalment of the shredder the assessment values could be confirmed in practice. The down times of the down streams screening machines and of the shredder have been reduced considerably.

High calorific fractions have the biggest share of the solid output of modern MBT plants. Finding an application for these fractions should be already done before starting to construct an MBT plant. This can be a challenge, especially in countries or regions, where thermal treatment options are unwanted. The paper describes properties of these materials, requirements on material quality and possible destinations. In Germany, SRF is mostly used in power plants, cement works and mono incineration plants. The most critical parameters are chlorine content and calorific value.

In 2008 AE&E Lentjes GmbH received the order for the turnkey supply of the incineration unit REC Harlingen (REC=ReststoffenEnergieCentrale). In this plant the high calorific portion of pre-treated municipal solid waste is thermally treated.

Compared to other treatment options for mixed municipal solid waste, the pure aerobic MBT cannot exploit the energy of the organic fraction, since it is simply biologically oxidized with the aim of inertization.
