Tex2Mat: The recycling of towels and laundry made from PET and cotton

The project “Tex2Mat” was a cooperation between companies working in the field of recycling or textiles and universities specializing in the field of polymer engineering and recycling. There were two polymers (PET and PA) examined and the whole project divided into two subprojects.

The EU’s legal requirements on circular economy present big challenges on the Austrian textile industry which is mostly dominated by small and mid-sized enterprises. Nowadays textiles material for towels and laundry tend to be more and more made from a mixture of fibres, typically PET and cotton, which makes recycling especially difficult. On the other hand, in order to avoid landfill, incineration and to preserve our resources, the closing of life time cycles is essential. In the course of the project “Tex2Mat” companies and universities working in that field came together to find a solution for that problem. The central task of the project was the separation of the PET fibres from the cotton fibres. In the following steps, the recycled PET fibres were analysed and their suitability for spinning determined. The central trials of the project were the trials for spinning and weaving which were successfully conducted and resulted in the production of towels in the same quality as the original.

Development of local municipal solid waste management in the Western Transdanubia region of Hungary

Hungarian municipal solid wastes (MSW) management has developed tremendously over the past 15 years. More than 3,000 landfills and dumps had been closed, just to mention one improvement. However, still, lots of work is necessary to accomplish the EU’s ambitious aim of decreasing landfilling and increasing recycling and composting.

State-of-the-art and future perspectives in textile recycling
© Lehrstuhl für Abfallverwertungstechnik und Abfallwirtschaft der Montanuniversität Leoben (11/2020)
Today, the blending of materials within textiles is an asset in the design of protective clothing and various technical applications, but material mixes and blends also found their way into retail trade. The rise in end-of-life items is thus putting pressure on waste management to develop suitable recycling processes. Still, in the textile sector, waste prevention claimed by policy seems to be a pious wish.

The Allegory of Stupidity and Waste

This paper on the allegory of stupidity and waste is a more or less daring view on tomorrow’s capabilities in global waste management. A society facing seemingly unresolvable ecological challenges seems to be immune to its own overconsumption.

Comparative Analysis of Transfer and Continual Learning for Vision-Based Particle Classification in Plastics Sorting for Recycling
© Lehrstuhl für Abfallverwertungstechnik und Abfallwirtschaft der Montanuniversität Leoben (12/2024)
In this study, we evaluate the effectiveness of transfer and continual learning techniques for vision-based trash particle detection and classification in plastics recycling. This task poses unique challenges for vision-based methods due to the great variety of particles in recycling material flows, their variability over time, and the lack of real recycling industrial datasets available for research.
