IBI Bateke Carbon Sink Plantation: An African Forestry Pilot Case
A forestry project in West Africa with a strong social and development component is perhaps the best example of what the Clean Development Mechanism was supposed to be about. Achieving it is not easy: many elements need to be brought together to produce a project that performs socially, developmentally and environmentally.
This article describes the elements of the IBI Bateke project, a savannah based agro-forestry project in The Democratic Republic of Congo (the Project). It considers the workings of the Project, at an operational and financial level. It sets out the expected benefits from a social and environmental perspective. It also considers the challenges of contracting for sale of carbon credits.

The economic influence of China on Africa has been apparent for some time, has this influence spread into the sphere of climate policy and law? This article considers the development and implementation of Chinese climate change policy and law and whether lessons can be drawn from the Chinese experience and be effectively applied to African countries. The analysis is made against the backdrop of development in China and Africa, Chinese development efforts and co-operation with African countries, and takes into account the wide differences in the levels of economic and social development of those countries.

Maßnahmen zur Renaturierung von Fließgewässern benötigen Flächen, die im Regelfall Nutzungen zugeführt sind. Vorausschauendes Flächenmanagement sowie Kooperation und partizipatives Vorgehen sind hier notwendig, um die Belange der Grundstückseigentümer aufgreifen zu können und die benötigten Flächen verfügbar zu machen. Am Beispiel vom Vorpommern wird dieses prospektive und stategische Flächenmanagement vorgestellt.
Partizipation betroffener Akteursgruppen zur Minderung der Nitratbelastung des Grundwassers

Die Nitratwerte im deutschen Grundwasser sind vielerorts seit über 20 Jahren erhöht. Die EU-Kommission beurteilte entsprechende Gesetzesnovellen der vergangenen Jahre mehrfach als unzureichend. Vorgestellt werden Untersuchungsergebnisse dazu, unter welchen Voraussetzungen kleine partizipative Gremien lokal zu einer Einhaltung der Nitratgrenzwerte in ihrer jeweiligen Region beitragen können.
Umsetzung und Auslegung des Artikels 6 der Fauna-Flora-Habitatrichtlinie (RL 92/43/EWG) in Frankreich

Der vorliegende Beitrag bietet eine Übersicht der Umsetzung von Art. 6 der Fauna-Flora-Habitatrichtlinie in der französischen Rechtsordnung. Besonders nachdem der Europäische Gerichtshof in der Rs. C-256/983 die mangelhafte Umsetzung der FFH-Richtlinie und insbesondere deren Art. 6 festgehalten hatte, musste sich der französische Gesetzgeber intensiv mit den naturschutzrechtlichen Vorgaben der Richtlinie auseinandersetzen. Wichtigste innerstaatliche Rechtsgrundlage für den Naturschutz ist der Code de l’environnement (CE). Daneben sind aber auch behördliche und außerbehördliche Informationen wie Leitfäden und Auslegungshilfen sowie die entsprechende Literatur zu berücksichtigen. Die französische Umsetzung der Schutzvorgaben von Art. 6 FFH-Richtlinie soll im Folgenden absatzweise beleuchtet werden.
