Road traffic noise level prediction in the city of Thessaloniki: a comparison between the French and British method

The EU Directive (2002/49/EC) relating to the assessment and management of environment noise was published in 2002 and it deals mainly with the definition of noise indicators, strategic noise mapping, noise management action plans and prediction methodologies. Until recently the most used method in Europe as well as in Greece for noise prediction was the British method, CRTN.

However, according to the EU Directive of 2002, the French national computation method “NMPBRoutes-96” is recommended to be implemented for Road Traffic Noise. For this purpose, in this paper, the description of the French method is presented including the operational characteristics, the necessary mathematical models with the involved parameters as well as the factors that influence the noise propagation. In the framework of a research study of the Transport Engineering Laboratory of A.U.Th the level of noise at certain points of the city, without obstacle and with obstacle intervention, was calculated, according to the implementation of the French and British method and the produced results were compared.

Statistical modeling approaches for urban traffic noise
© Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
Simulation of urban traffic noise along with a statistical model of traffic noise for the road network in the city center is presented in this paper. The road network of the central park of Patras –Greece was used as the study area. The model’s parameters include traffic volume, with every type of vehicle, and the average speed of vehicles.
