Intra-hourly variations of CO concentrations in Thessaloniki during the rush hours

Large urban conurbations are suffered from huge traffic due to extensive use of private cars that degrade the quality of life (air pollution, exposure to dangerous pollutant concentrations of both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic substances, noise pollution, lost traveling time in the cars due to traffic congestion and a consequent number of health problems such as backbone and back affections, nervous breakdown, blood pressure increase, etc.). Congested roads are significant sources of air pollutants.

The presence of high CO concentrations in congested roads are mainly due to the operation of diesel engines and could be characterized as an indicator of the traffic in urban environments, especially when traffic measurements are rare or absent. In this paper we analysed a yearlong dataset (2004-2005) of CO concentrations measured in a 5 min basis at three monitoring sites in urban area of Thessaloniki. Especially we studied the rush hours every working day, every Saturday and every Sunday and compare the results during winter and summer period of the year. During these hours the highest concentrations of the above traffic related pollutants presented their maximum values and therefore could give us indications about the traffic habits of the residents of Thessaloniki.

Influence of temporal variation of traffic volume and composition on air quality in urban areas
© Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
The aim of this paper is to investigate the influence of the traffic temporal evolution on the air pollution in urban areas using the city of Thessaloniki as a case study. Data from traffic counts were used and include traffic volume and composition in main roads and intersections of the Thessaloniki city centre.
