Technical parameters and operational cost of a pilot MSW balingwrapping in Alexandroupolis, Greece
The technology of baling-wrapping offers a solution of interim storage of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management. In Greece there are no documented cases of cylindrical baling-wrapping of MSW even though such technology is being used widely in other countries.
The pilot operation of a baler wrapper near the city of Alexandroupolis, in Northern Greece, is presented. Technical parameters, input data (tn of MSW), output data (bales) and the operational cost are being examined. The operation of the baler was nuisance free with no production of leachate or emissions of odours. Calculated operational cost values are in the range of 6.00-9.00 € per bale. Suggestions are being discussed about a probable future utilization of a baler wrapper as a part of the Regional Waste Management Planning for the Region of East Macedonia and Thrace.

Hungarian municipal solid wastes (MSW) management has developed tremendously over the past 15 years. More than 3,000 landfills and dumps had been closed, just to mention one improvement. However, still, lots of work is necessary to accomplish the EU’s ambitious aim of decreasing landfilling and increasing recycling and composting.

Landfilling is the main disposal method to remove organic solid waste in Turkey. Even if the domestic solid waste generally has high water content and it is reach by means of biodegradables, the number of composting facilities is limited and they are mainly located in the cities with high population. However, composting is an advantageous method for the countries having both high amounts of organics in their waste and widespread agricultural activities, such as Turkey. Limited landfilling areas and difficulties to locate new landfills are the effects to aim composting, as well as it is the priority disposal method of Turkish Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
