Soil carbon sequestration affected by cultivation of poor pastures in arid regions of Central Iran

Soil carbon sequestration through changes in land use and management is one of the important strategies to mitigate the global greenhouse effect. This study was conducted to estimate the rate of soils carbon sequestration in land use changes from poor pastures (PP) to wheat fields (WF) and poor pastures to alfalfa fields (AF) occurring in Abarkooh plain, Central Iran.

Land use changes resulted in significant decrease in soil electrical conductivity (EC) and increases in, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, carbohydrate concentration and carbon mineralization. Similarly, organic carbon and total nitrogen pools were far greater in AF and WF compared to and PP land use systems. In poor pastures of arid ecosystems, where soils are generally poor in soil organic matter, alfalfa cropping could be an important alternative for soil carbon sequestration, and thus lowering CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere.

The effectiveness of cadmium removal from soils by two anionic surfactants at different soil/solution ratio (m/V) was investigated. At critical micelle concentration (CMC) Rosulfan L reduced surface tension of water more sufficiently than ABS Na/S. In soil/surfactant systems CMC values clearly increased in comparison with fresh solutions, indicating surfactants sorption.

Soil sealing in Germany is progressing steadily. As a result, important soil functions such as water permeability and soil fertility are being lost. These soil functions can be (partially) restored by unsealing. To support the implementation of existing unsealing potentials, the Federal Environment Agency has funded a research project. The analysis of the legal requirements for unsealing carried out in the project has shown that the topic affects various regulatory areas and instruments of environmental and planning law, but that the relevant regulations and instruments are only applied to a limited extent in practice. This article presents the most important results including suggestions for the further development of the legal framework.
