The risk of red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) infestation on the native greek palm tree Phoenix theophrasti Greuter (Arecales: Arecaceae)

The red palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), the most important pest of palm trees in the world, has invaded during the last decade the Mediterranean basin where it caused severe damage to date palm cultivations as well as to ornamental palm trees. R. ferrugineus has been found in Greece, for the first time, in Hersonissos (Heraklion district, Crete) on November , 2005, infesting Phoenix canariensis.

Then, R. ferrugineus has also been found on Rhodes island, in Oropos, Ellinikon and Glyfada (Attiki district) in Dilesi (Voiotia district) and in Amaliada and Killini (Ilia district) infesting mainly P. canariensis. No data are available about the native Greek species  Phoenix theophrasti (common name: Cretan palm, palm of Theophrastus), as R. ferrugineus was never present in the areas where this species was planted. In order to test he susceptibility of P. theophrasti to the red palm weevil, six seedlings of Cretan palm were placed separately on six plastic cylindrical cages in an underground laboratory under constant conditions (26 oC, 65% R.H., photoperiod: 16h light, 8h dark). In each cage 6 pairs of R. ferrugineus were placed. After 100 days, four of the six infested seedlings were killed by the feeding activity of R. ferrugineus larvae. However, only from two seedlings F1 adults were emerged (2 and 3 specimens respectively). The fact that P. theophrasti is infested and killed by R. ferrugineus is very significant because the population of this palm species in Greece is unique in the world.

The forest fulfils a variety of different functions for the environment, for animal and plant species and for people. Safeguarding the diversity of functions, in conjunctionwith sustainability, is the essential principle of forestmanagement and is as such anchored in the state forest laws. In practice, especially the handling of calamities in FFH areas conflicts between nature conservation and forestry.

Natura 2000 Forest Areas in Greece: a National Implementation Review

The protection of natural habitats and species has always been an important field for legislative and political action at an EU level. The first regulatory step in this direction came in the form of Directive 79/409 on the conservation on wild birds (“Birds Directive”) which was later complemented by Directive 92/43 on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora (“Habitats Directive”). Both Directives are significant tools for the conservation of nature and biodiversity in the EU as they are legally binding for the Member States.
