SUSTAINABLE LANDFILLING IN AUSTRALIA

Australia is located in the southern hemisphere and occupies nearly 8 million square kilometres. The majority of the population of 20 million is housed within 100 kilometres of the east coast. Australia is governed by a Federal Government and six state governments, one of which is Queensland. Queensland is located in the north eastern corner of Australia, but the majority of its population is in the south eastern corner. The capital of Queensland is Brisbane which is also located in the south east

Whilst landfills are often seen as a necessary evil, a well managed facility can enhance its reputation in the community. Swanbank has introduced a number of environmentally sound projects within the site to demonstrate that landfills and sustainability are not mutually exclusive.

Mass balance of three municipal solid waste landfilling schemes
© IWWG International Waste Working Group (10/2007)
The results presented in this paper are issued from ELIA (Environmental Landfill Impact Assessment) research program investigations conducted by the CRPE (Veolia Environmental Services Research Centre) and supported by ADEME (the French Agency for Environment and Energy Management). Three waste landfilling schemes have been evaluated through the construction and follow-up of semi-industrial devices. Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT) before landfilling has been compared to the conventional landfill and the concept of bioreactor. 34 months of monitoring led to the establishment of different mass balances (carbon, nitrogen) as well as the estimation of the dry mass losses occurring during the treatment and their repartition between the liquid and gaseous phases

APPLICATION OF INFRARED THERMOGRAPHY TO STUDY BEHAVIOUR OF BIOGAS CAPTATION WELLS
© IWWG International Waste Working Group (10/2007)
Municipal solid wastes collected in sanitary landfills contain a significant percentage of organic substances which produce large amount of biogas due to the anaerobic conditions, that are present underground. The biogas trapped inside the landfill causes an overpressure which produces very dangerous emissions and escapes of biogas. To avoid the risk of these migrations and to exploit the heating value of the gas, biogas is generally collected and used as fuel in energy systems.

Biomass Wastes-to-Energy in China – Biogas from Landfills or Anaerobic Digestion Plants?
© Lehrstuhl für Abfallverwertungstechnik und Abfallwirtschaft der Montanuniversität Leoben (11/2010)
The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) in China has acknowledged that till 2050 up to one third of three billion tons of coal per year could be replaced by biomass energy in China. Renewable Energy from biomass waste is one of the pillars in China’s long term power supply strategy, targeting 15% renewable energy generation or about 600 GW in 2020. Landfill gas, including biogas from waste water treatment plants and from agriculture biogas plants are seen as the main sources (NDRC 2007).
