A current operating treatment plant for electronic devices and waste electronic equipment was tested in terms of its optimization potential and expandability.

Landfill Deconstruction – Resource Potential, Climate Impact and Economic Analysis
© Montanuniversität Leoben (11/2012)
Landfilling has always been one of the most important ways of waste disposal. The pollutants in the waste as well as the biological degradation and chemical reactions in the landfill body pose a threat to human health and the environment. However, the landfill contains not only pollutants, but also recyclable materials, which might be utilized. The Umweltbundesamt has conducted a study on landfill deconstruction in Austria, in which the landfilled resource potential was estimated, the climate impact of the recovery of the potential recyclables was analyzed and an economic situation around landfill mining was assessed.

Landfill Mining – A Contribution of Waste Management to the Conservation of Resources
© Montanuniversität Leoben (11/2012)
The term urban mining broadly comprises anthropogenically created deposits of material resources. When considering the fact that a shortage of resources is expected in the future as well as an increase in price, these anthropogenic deposits are becoming more and more important for the provision of resources. This article refers to landfill mining which is a section of urban mining. It includes an evaluation of potential resources. A brief description of the landfill remediation method follows below. Incentives and impediments regarding landfill remediation are specified as well as required research and development activities.

Assessment of Landfill Mining under Consideration of Mining Methods
© Montanuniversität Leoben (11/2012)
Most socioeconomic assessments of landfill mining are based on cost-benefit-analysis (CBA). Nevertheless the results vary considerably due to different sets of parameters and assumed values. In the mining industry the approach and the assessment of deposits are practically standardised on international level.

Landfill Mining in the Province of Styria
© Montanuniversität Leoben (11/2012)
In times of ongoing shortage of natural ressources and rising energy prices, the raw material po-tential of (waste) landfills are becoming increasingly important. Incentives for "Landfill Mining" are in addition to the extraction of raw materials the avoidance or reduction of landfill aftercare costs or recovery of landfill volume.

Waste Intelligence – the Potential of Waste as a Resource
© Montanuniversität Leoben (11/2012)
The waste industry is presently undergoing a profound change. Rising commodity prices result in higher demand for secondary raw materials. On the other hand it requires continuously more advanced recycling procedures to process the consumer waste which is steadily becoming more complex in its composition.

Raw Materials for Bavaria – a Resources Strategy
© Montanuniversität Leoben (11/2012)
Due to its important high-tech sector, Bavaria is notably dependent on strategic raw materials. The study "Resource-strategy for Bavaria, considering in particular secondary raw materials" (ATZ 2011) investigates which raw materials are essential for the Bavarian economy and which waste products might be possibly used to substitute these raw materials. The following abstract shows some of the results of this study.

An Analysis of Carbon Utilisation Options in the Austrian Industry
© Montanuniversität Leoben (11/2012)
Carbon dioxide contributes to the "Greenhouse Effect" and global warming. Nowadays a lot of efforts are being done to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to counter this effect. The strategies towards this target include the prevention von CO2, the reduction of the CO2 amount through efficient use of fossil fuels, such as the CO2 capture and storage or utilisation. "Carbon Capture and Utilisation" (CCU) technologies use carbon dioxide as a raw material for chemical and biological processes. Currently a lot of research and development work is carried out concerning these technologies.

URBAN MINING, Life-Cycle Balance of Recycled Products
© Montanuniversität Leoben (11/2012)
At the Education Center for Technology and Management in Dietikon, Switzerland, in fall 2011 a life-case-study has been conducted so as to compare the environmental impact of the production of concrete out of recycled building materials versus the production of concrete from natural resources.
