Integrated Management of Municipal Solid Waste in Santiago de Chile – Recycling Treatment and Final Disposal

A detailed analysis of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago de Chile has been carried out within the framework of a research initiative of the German Helmholtz-Association.

The following paper gives an overview of the current situation of the management of MSW in Santiago de Chile (amount of MSW generation, MSW collection, MSW composition, recycling activities, MSW final disposal). Afterwards different waste management scenarios will be presented, which have been developed in close cooperation with stakeholders and scientists in Chile. These scenarios take into consideration different technical options for the management of MSW, including separate collection of biowaste, mechanical biological treatment as well as the production of Refuse Derived Fuels.
